If a person goes to a large art museum or looks through an art history book, he or she will be amazed at how many great artists have existed throughout history. The most intriguing thing about the works of great artists is how different they are and yet all of them follow fundamental artistic rules. By incorporating and manipulating some very simple art principles and elements, these masters produced quality two and three dimensional art pieces.

The basic art elements are:

color, line, shape, form, space, texture, and value

The art principles are:

balance, harmony, movement, proportion, unity, rhythm, emphasis, and variety

This Color and Design section presents lessons, exercises, and projects which will help the student / artist understand and use the very important art principles and elements. Knowledge of the art rules will not only enhance a personal appreciation of art works but will also help the student create their own works of art.
